I want to join as an Individual

How do I sign up for an individual account with Idealist?

1. Visit www.idealist.org and click on the yellow "sign up" button.
2. Fill out the form, check the box to “agree to the Idealist Terms and Conditions”, and click on the "Sign Up" button.
3. You will receive an email from Idealist.org asking you to verify your account information. To do this, click on the link contained in the email (make sure that the entire link is underlined. If it is not, you will need to copy and paste the link into your internet browser). If you do not receive this verification email, look for it in your Spam/Junk mail folder.

What can I do with an individual account?

Individuals who register with Idealist.org can use Idealist to, among other things:

• Search and browse our website for resources, organizations and opportunities that match their interests, skills, and needs.
• Sign up to receive emails with information about new opportunities posted to Idealist (such as job openings, volunteer opportunities, events, and resources) that match criteria specified by you.


• Create a personal, volunteer, and/or speaker profile with your interests, skills, and schedule. These Profiles can then be searched by organizations and individuals registered with Idealist.


• Find and connect with people around the world who share your interests, goals, and ideas.

Is my organization eligible?

In our Organizations Directory, we list the following:

• Nonprofit and community organizations, civil associations, and unions
• Foundations
• Museums and libraries
• K-12 schools and universities
• Departments of parks and recreation & environmental protection agencies
• Peace Corps, AmeriCorps*Vista, and other year-of-service programs

This database does not list politicians, candidates for office, for-profit schools, or government agencies (excluding the ones mentioned above).

Is my Consultancy eligible?

The members of our Consultant Directory offer direct services to nonprofit and voluntary organizations. Please note that we do not consider consumer goods or monetary and/or in-kind donations as direct services. Therefore, we do not currently list companies that donate a percentage of their profits to charity but do not provide direct services to the nonprofit community.


Every consultant/vendor/freelancer, regardless of location, must register and pay a membership fee for inclusion in the Consultant Directory. Membership is $50/6 months or $95/year.

Is my group eligible?
Idealist Groups are created by people who want to share ideas and resources, get involved in local or global communities, and help create opportunities for others to be involved. The primary purpose of Idealist Groups is to allow Idealist members to create a community around an issue or common interest, and each Idealist Group has a forum where group members can meet and interact. Please note that Idealist Groups cannot be used to promote a business or commercial enterprise.


My Idealist Group is eligible. How do I register?

How do I register as an organization, consultant, or Idealist Group?

Registration is free to all nonprofit organizations (and Idealist Groups) and must be completed by a permanent staff member of the organization. Consultants or recruiters that work with nonprofit organizations are not allowed to create an account on the behalf of one of their nonprofit clients. However, consultants can register for membership in our Consultant Directory. Please note that there is a membership fee of $50/6months or $95/year.


To register a Group (Organization, Idealist Group, or Consultant), you must first sign up for an Individual account and then submit a profile for your Group to be reviewed by our staff.

To begin, go to http://www.idealist.org and click on the "Add your organization / group" link found in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage, above the blue menu bar. You will be led through the process of creating or logging in to your individual account and registering your group.

Please keep in mind that the registration form requires only contact information and your group's mission statement. When possible, please provide an email address associated to your group. Please do not provide information about specific programs, events, or position opportunities; such information may be added later.

What happens after I register as a Nonprofit Organization, Consultant, or Idealist Group?


Our staff will then review your application and in 24-48 hours we will email you, possibly requesting more information. If you do not hear from us within two business days, please make sure to check your spam/junk/bulk folder and inquire with your email service provider whether any '@idealist.org' messages are being filtered. Approval notifications are sent via an automated system and sometimes get misclassified in the "unsolicited" category. If two business days have passed, and you are unable to find a message from us, contact us for further assistance.

Once your group has been approved, you can access your group's account by logging in to your Individual account, clicking on the "Groups and Listings" tab of your Control Panel, and then clicking on the “Edit & Post” link. You will be taken to the Entry & Update Menu where you will be able to manage your group's listings, update your group's profile, administer account privileges, and more. If you sign up as a Consultant, the first time that you log in to your account, you will be prompted to activate your membership ($50/6months or $95/year).
